Boxcar No. 218282 was built in April of 1974 by the Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company at their plant in Chicago, Illinois under P-S Lot 9724. This 60-foot boxcar was originally Erie Lackawanna Railway (EL) No. 68085, and it was designed to convey auto parts, such as prefabricated doors, panels, and frames, between automotive assembly plants. It is believed that this specific car saw service between the Ford assembly plant in Mahwah, New Jersey and Ford parts fabrication facilities in the area around Detroit, Michigan between 1974 and 1980, meaning it would have traveled through Port Jervis almost weekly during that six-year timespan.

This boxcar was conveyed to Conrail on April 1, 1976 as CR 218282 (class BE62D). It was again transferred to CSX Transportation on June 1, 1999 and re-lettered NYC 218282. It was the last Erie Lackawanna boxcar in revenue service on the CSX roster, and TOYX representatives began discussing the car’s future with CSX in March of 2020. The No. 218282 reached the end of its mandated 50-year service life in April of 2024, and CSX Transportation immediately donated this historic boxcar to TOYX be used for Operation Toy Train’s annual Toys for Tots train and historic display in Port Jervis.

This car was delivered to Port Jervis on June 19, 2024. On July 14, 2024, the graffiti was patched out, temporarily returning the car to its 1992 Conrail paint. It will remain in Conrail paint until such time that funding becomes available to restore it to its 1974 Erie Lackawanna appearance (shown here on a Walthers HO scale model).
